As far as cell phone plans go, Sprint has become one of the largest wireless phone companies since they acquired fellow cell phone giant Nextel. The cell phone website says Sprint, together with Nextel, is poised to offer the best of Sprint’s wireless plans along with the popular walkie-talkie Nextel phones.

For customers who are looking into Sprint’s wireless plans, it is important to note that they offer individual plans, walkie-talkie plans, data plans, and family plans. Choosing which of the four cell phone plans they offer can be quite complicated unless you know exactly what each one offers.

Like all other cell phone providers, Sprint offers an individual plan as their base. The individual plans start at 450 minutes for $39.99 a month and range to 2,000 minutes for $99.99 a month. Free nights and weekends are standard and the nights start at 7pm. What is rather unique is that Sprint allows customers to purchase 50 additional minutes a month for an extra $5 added to their monthly bill. Also, they can opt for the night to start at 6pm for another $5 a month. These additions are available at the family plan level as well. Also standard for the individual plan is call waiting, voice mail, and free domestic long distance.

Sprint’s family cell phone plans are much like the individual plans as far as standard features and additional features. The family plan does differ from the individual in that a group can share, up to five phone lines, the monthly bill. Along with the bill, the family plan members share the minutes as well. Family plans start with two phone lines and up to three others can be added to the plan at $9.99 a month extra. Plans start $59.99 a month for 550 minutes to $149.99 a month for 3,000 minutes.

What made Nextel phones so popular was their walkie-talkie feature. Upon acquiring Nextel, Sprint assumed the use of this feature and has added it as an optional feature for their wireless plans. Cell phone plans with the walkie-talkie feature are more expensive each month and to add a line to a family plan costs $20 a month instead of $9.99 however, walkie-talkie calls can be made to any other Sprint walkie-talkie subscriber without counting against the monthly minute total. Options are available to use the walkie-talkie for international calling as well.

Sprint customers can also add on features like unlimited text messaging, mobile e-mail, SprintTV, music, and Sprint picture mail. All of these features require an extra monthly fee.

Like all other providers, Sprint offers its customers a selection of data plans as well. Data plans can include unlimited e-mail, web, and walkie-talkie where calls cost 25 cents a minute or the amount of data can be reduced to 10 MB a month and the cost of making a call drops to 20 cents a minute. Either plan is subject to roaming fees.

Sprint offers a variety of phones for its customers. In addition to the Nextel cell phones, they sell Samsung cell phones, Motorola, Blackberry, and LG.
